چکیده
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine possible genotoxic effects of a new very promising antibacterial/antiviral drug FS-1. METHODS The drug was tested in TA98, TA100, TA102, TA1535 and TA1537 strains of Salmonella (Ames test) with and without metabolic activation, and also in mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells by means of micronucleus and comet assays. In microbes the drug was tested at concentrations up to 500 μg/plate and in mouse lymphoma cells up to 2,000 μg/ml. RESULTS In both test-systems in all experiments completely negative results were obtained although FS-1 was tested at maximum tolerated doses. CONCLUSIONS The drug is not genotoxic. This is advantageous because many antibacterial/antiviral drugs possess such activity.

(+/-)-Aeroplysinin-1, an optically active 1,2-dihydroarene-1,2-diol, was isolated from the marine sponges Verongia aerophoba (+-isomer) and Ianthella ardis (- -isomer). For the experiments presented we used the +-isomer from Verongia aerophoba. Here we describe the hitherto unknown biological and pharmacological property of this compound to display pronounced anticancer activity against L5178y ...

The mutagenic potential of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (diEGBE) was examined with a Tier I battery of in vitro assays followed by a Tier II in vivo Drosophila sex-linked recessive lethal assay. The in vitro battery consisted of: the Salmonella mutagenicity test, the L5178Y mouse lymphoma test, a cytogenetics assay using Chinese hamster ovary cells and the unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) a...

Health risk assessment of nanomaterials is a new and important area emerging; obtaining nanoparticles by green synthesis method and performing cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and antimicrobial testing is an important endpoint. In vitro studies for nanoparticles (NPs) obtained by the non-toxic method offer many advantages, such as the study of the bioavailability of nanomaterials to sensitiv...
متن کاملSafety studies on epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) preparations. Part 1: genotoxicity.
Public interest in green tea has grown recently due to the potential health benefits from its consumption. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a principal polyphenolic component of green tea, is considered key to these healthful qualities. Although numerous studies have evaluated the anti-cancer effects of green tea and EGCG, few have examined the safety of EGCG consumption. The genotoxic potentia...
متن کاملMutagenicity studies on FD&C red No.3.
FD&C Red No.3 (erythrosine) has been used as a dye in foods, drugs and cosmetics since its approval by the US Department of Agriculture in 1907. In 1977 the Certified Color Manufacturers' Association (CCMA) initiated studies on FD&C Red No.3 including chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies in rats and mice. Data from the CCMA chronic studies revealed an increased incidence of thyroid foll...
